Things You'll Need:
- A building with the proper permits
-
Step 1
Have or build a place to have your Lhasa Apso rescue. It needs to be a building that is correctly zoned for business in the state of Florida. You also must pay attention to your particular town's zoning regulations for the amount of animals that can be in one location. You will need permits from the state of Florida to have more animals than allowed in your rescue. You can obtain these permits by going to city hall in the town where your Lhasa Apso Rescue will be. Most of the time, in the state of Florida, you can only have 4 animals in a building unless you have a permit for an animal shelter. This permit can be obtained at the city hall in your town.
-
Step 2
Contact the Lhasa Apso Breed Association of America, which you can find through the UKC and AKC. Contact them as well. The breed association will tell you what you need to fill out in order to be a registered Lhasa Apso Rescue in the state of Florida. Follow their recommendations and they will list you in the Rescuers lists for the Lhasa Apso breed. The UKC and AKC are active in the state of Florida because there are several major shows that take place their yearly in Orlando and in Tampa. If you are near one of these cities, you can find volunteers with the UKC and AKC who will be willing to help you out.
-
Step 3
Advertise that you are a Lhasa Apso Rescue. Talk to local animal shelters, pet stores, humane societies, and pounds near you and tell them you are looking for all and any Lhasa Apsos that need rescues. Most of the time they will surrender them to you as a certified Lhasa Apso rescue. In Florida, many shelters put animals down if they cannot find homes for them. This is because of the pet overpopulation in Florida. Therefore, if you are a no-kill Lhasa Apso rescue, you will have many dogs to consider.
-
Step 4
Go online and read message boards, forums, and websites to learn about Lhasa Apsos that need to be rescued near you or around the state of Florida. Rescue any that you come across. The areas for biggest pet abandonments include Orlando, Tampa, and the coasts.
-
Step 5
Re-home, foster, and adopt any Lhasa Apso that you cannot keep.
-
Step 6
Be especially aware during the summer and fall, and hurricane season. These are the times in Florida that see the greatest number of dogs needing to be rescued.
