to Deal With Student Cell Phones in the Classroom

You are in the middle of teaching a class, when a cell phone goes off, or you notice that instead of paying attention, a student is busy texting on the cell phone--the new equivalent of passing a note. While some schools ban them, some don’t, and sometimes it is necessary for a student to have a cell phone with him for protection. So what is a teacher to do? Here are some suggestions.

    Instructions

      • 1

Establish the rules from the first day. Write the rules on the blackboard and give each student a handout.

      • 2

List your expectations in the handout--such as the phone should be turned off during lectures and no text messaging--as well as the punishment for violating the rules--such as a trip to the principal's office or detention.

      • 3

Have students check-in their cell phone with you as they enter the classroom. Each cell phone should be labeled with the student's name, address, phone number and homeroom. The labeled cell phone is handed to you when the student enters the class and is returned when he leaves.

      • 4

Contact the parents of a student who repeatedly refuses to cooperate with any of the rules.
