One consistently popular idea for a preteen, tween or teen girl's birthday is a slumber party. Before you picture yourself up all night listening to a group of gigglers and rising to a house that looks like a tornado hit it and say "No way!", think again. By following these steps and having a plan, you can pull off a sleepover that is fun for the girls attending and also survivable for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Card stock and envelopes
  • Markers
  • Balloons
  • Streamers
  • Board games
  • DVDs
  • Pillows
  • Disposable cameras
  • Finger foods
  • Small flashlights
  • Water balloons
  • Sheet cake
  • Frosting
  • Vanilla Wafers
  • Twinkies
  • Decorative icing, candies
  1. Step 1

Cut pieces of colorful card stock to fit inside an envelope. Design each card to look like a pillow. Write the slumber party details on the card. If desired, buy or make envelopes that open from the shorter side so that it looks like a pillow case. You can also use an electronic invitation service, which saves trees and money.

  2. Step 2

Remove as much furniture as you can from the designated slumber party room. If you can have it on a different floor (such as your finished basement) or the opposite end of the house, you might sleep better. Decorate with lots of balloons and streamers. Throw big, oversized pillows, bean bag chairs and other comfy items around the room. Stack board games in one corner and DVDs in another for late night fun. Set disposable cameras around the room so they can take pictures of their fun night.

  3. Step 3

Supply the party guests with an abundance of finger foods. Chicken tenders, pizza bagels and mozzarella sticks are good hot choices; pretzels, popcorn and cheese puffs are always popular; and fruits, veggies and cheese chunks offer a healthy choice. Go for lots of beverages that don't have caffeine. The kids will be hyped up enough without it.

  4. Step 4

Provide options for activities, but do not be surprised if the girls just want to do their own thing. If it is warm outside and the kids all have a change of clothing, you might allow them to have a water balloon fight or play with the water sprinklers (this outdoor activity might just tucker them out). Give small flashlights as favors and let the kids play flashlight tag in the backyard after the sun has gone down. The object of the game is to tag whomever you can with your flashlight beam.

  5. Step 5

Decorate a sheet cake to look like several girls sleeping in a big bed. Ice it with white (or any color) frosting. Place one vanilla wafer for each head along one of the long sides of the top of the cake. Set a Twinkie under each vanilla wafer for the body. Make a frosting "blanket" or use fondant and cover the Twinkie bodies. Decorate the vanilla wafers with icing hair and candy faces.

Tips & Warnings
  • Provide a fun outing or other activity for younger siblings. This way they will not feel left out, but also won't pester the older kids.
  • Do not leave children unattended outside at night.
  • Don't let your partiers disturb neighbors late at night by being too loud outside.
