SAMBO is an effective self defense martial art, as well as a widely practiced sport, which focuses of grappling and throws. One defensive move is a counter-countermeasure. It is employed as a way to continue to attack, when your initial attempt at a throw has been countered by your opponent. In this way you can keep the upper hand instead of allowing your opponent to follow up his counter with a throw or hold. One of the most common two throws used in concert is the Leg Sweep, which if prevented, is followed by a Kick-Up Throw.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sparring Partner
  • Floor Padding
  • Practice Space
  1. Step 1

Begin in the starting grappling position for SAMBO. To do this reach around grasp the back of your opponent’s collar with your right hand and the back of his sleeve at elbow level with your left hand. Your opponent should take you by the same holds as well.

  2. Step 2

Place your left foot forward past your opponent’s left side. This is done in preparation for a leg sweep. Lock your right leg behind your opponent’s right leg, but he will recognize what is coming and sidestep to his left. This will result in him placing one leg on either side of your right foot. With his legs spread and balanced like this he cannot be taken down by a leg sweep and will attempt to throw you unless you can respond immediately with the follow up Kick Up Throw.

  3. Step 3

Put your body’s weight on your left leg, letting the toe of your right foot rise into the air. This will allow you to turn on your heel. Step backwards with your left foot, placing it as far behind you and to your left as possible. Ideally you will be able to plant it firmly to the left of your opponent’s left foot. This will place your lower body and legs facing directly away from your opponent, and leave your upper body twisted if you are to hold onto your opponent.

  4. Step 4

Push off with your right foot and turn, twisting your body counterclockwise as hard as you can. Pull your opponent along with you as you turn, using your left foot as the fulcrum for this technique. Lift your right leg off the ground as pull your opponent around in an arc, finishing by dumping him to the ground, flat on his back, off to your left side. In order to do this properly you must be careful to maintain your balance on your left leg at all times. If you do not you will spill over and fall atop your opponent when you throw him.
