  1. Step 1

Get a building that you can use for your chihuahua rescue. In the state of Indiana, this building must be zoned for businesses or nonprofits. Also, check with your town to see if you need additional kennel licenses. Get a rescue license from the city council or city hall in your town. Set up your business with a taxpayer ID number and register with the government through the IRS, listed in the Resources area below.

  2. Step 2

Contact that Indiana Humane Society. The society will list you in its database as a chihuahua rescue, and it might have some chihuahuas that need to be rescued right away.

  3. Step 3

Contact the ASPCA in the town where you live and tell them you are a chihuahua rescue. They might have some dogs for you to take, and if not they will keep you on the list. The website is listed in Resources.

  4. Step 4

Let the AKC and UKC in Indiana know that you are going to be a chihuahua rescue, and tell them whether you rescue only purebreds or you rescue mixes as well. They will put you on their lists as a rescuer. These are listed in Resources.

  5. Step 5

Contact local shelters, pounds, adoption centers and police stations, and tell them that you are a chihuahua rescue. They will let you know whenever there is a chihuahua that needs to be homed.
