How to Paint an RC Car Body

A radio controlled or RC car is a miniature version of a full sized car. You can paint the body of an RC car to resemble your wildest fashion statements. Stick with one particular color or add a design to pay homage to your favorite team, hobby or person. Paint an RC car body by using the right tools and the right paint for the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a design or a color of paint. If you want to use a specific design you should look for stencils and colors relating to that design. Otherwise you can stick to gathering the necessary supplies to paint your RC car. You’ll need an airbrush, paint and of course a drop cloth to cover your work area.

    • 2

Prepare your work by laying out a drop cloth. Put on the face mask and gloves to protect your body from the paint. Set up your paint in the airbrush and practice using it a few times before you try it on your car.

    • 3

Cover any areas of the car body that you don’t want painted with masking tape. These areas include the windows and tires. You can also ask at your hobby store for specific stickers that fit over the windows.

    • 4

Spray a thin layer of paint over the car body and let it dry before you continue. This thin layer will actually protect the car and the areas you don’t want painted. The paint reacts with the tape and creates a thin seal that prevents paint from getting under the tape and ruining the body. Keep the nozzle of the airbrush 10-12 inches away from the body of the car. This ensures an even coating of paint on the surface of the vehicle.

    • 5

Apply a second coat of paint to the RC car body and allow the coat to dry. You can then apply your stencils and a different color of paint. Let dry, then examine the car body to see if you need a third coat. Cover the car body in a layer of paint sealant or clear paint to protect the color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many hobbyists prefer water based paints such as those from Parma. These paints are smoother and have a cleaner look than those with a latex or oil base.

  • The nozzle setting of the airbrush depends on your own personal preference. A wider nozzle like a 44 magnum will give you broad strokes, while a smaller nozzle in the 10-20 range will create a smaller line perfect for detail work.

  • Practice, practice and practice some more before you start spraying your RC car body. One slip of the hand and you could damage the car body.
