Instructions

    • 1

Round up the bill to the nearest even dollar amount. For example, round up a check total of $31.54 to $32.

    • 2

Divide the result from Step 1 by 2. Continuing the example, divide 32 by 2 to get 16.

    • 3

Add the result from Step 2 to the original rounded-up number. In the example, add 16 to 32 to get 48.

    • 4

Add a zero to the result in Step 3. Continuing the example, add a zero to 48 to get 480.

    • 5

Convert the result from Step 4 to dollars and cents by placing a decimal point in front of the last two numbers. To complete the example, add decimal to 480 so that the final figure is $4.80, roughly 15 percent of the $31.54 dinner bill.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the service has been superb and you want to tip 20%, follow the same approach but this time don't divide the number by 2. Just take the rounded up figure and add it to itself. So a bill of $32 would be $32 + $32 = $64. Which comes to $6.40.
