How to Do a Roll off Lift in Ballet

The lift can be one of the coolest dance moves imaginable if it is executed properly. It involves large, sweeping movements. Lift movements are sometimes graceful and sometimes very raunchy. Though most have roots in classical ballet, some have deviated from the proper French form and become something else entirely. One such lift is the "Roll off Lift," a very sexy move that is currently used in a lot of jazz and Latin numbers. If executed properly, it looks simply incredible.

Instructions

  1. Female Instructions

    • 1

Lay flat on your back to start. Roll the lower part of your torso backwards. You should be balancing on your upper back and shoulders. Keep your legs above your head.

    • 2

Put your hands behind your legs so that they have extra support from resting against your thighs during the lift itself. Your partner will now begin to pull you up.

    • 3

Start to unwind your hunched body as your partner pulls you up. As you come up, make sure you use your partners bent legs to roll off from. You should no longer be upside down. The natural positioning will make this part very easy, as your body is essentially righting itself.

    • 4

Finish unwinding so that you are standing right-side-up. Plant your feet on the floor to stick the landing.

    Male Instructions

    • 5

Stand with your legs spread shoulder width apart. Bend your knees.

    • 6

      Grasp the female's hands.

    • 7

Pull the female up, using your legs for support. She will start to unwind herself.

    • 8

Let go of her hands. Place both arms around her waist for support.

    • 9

Hold her waist firmly for support. Guide her back onto the floor once she has straightened herself out.
