How to Pass the Puck in Ice Hockey

Passing is one of the most important aspects of ice hockey. It is such an important element, that it is statistically tracked through “assists.” Knowing how to effectively pass will help make you a better all-around player and a scoring threat, since defenders won’t be able to predict your next moves.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your head up and constantly looking while handling the puck and preparing for a pass. Look at your teammates and determine whether there is a clear path for the puck, also known as a “passing lane.” Generally, the shorter distance the puck must travel, the higher your chances of reaching the other player.

    • 2

Press the blade of your stick to the ground at all times. The blade should be flat against the ice in preparation for the pass. A bent blade will affect your passing accuracy and velocity.

    • 3

Skate directly toward the teammate to whom you intend to pass. This helps set your body and the puck’s momentum for the pass. Just before you begin your motion to pass the puck, turn your body 90 degrees and keep skating.

    • 4

Pass the puck by keeping contact between the stick and puck the entire time. Twist your wrists so the entire motion is quick and seamless. You should never wind the stick up like a slap shot in order to pass the puck. Maintain eye contact with your teammate while going through this motion.

    • 5

Follow through with the stick after you pass the puck. One way to help improve passing accuracy is the follow through. By letting your stick go through this arcing motion, your body’s mechanics ensure a straighter shot than if you simply stopped your stick.
