When it comes to choosing a theme for a Halloween party, there is a lot to consider. When choosing a theme, you need to first decide how tame or how scary you want your party to be. Here are some ideas for your consideration.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out what age group or groups you will be inviting. This can change your theme ideas dramatically. For small children, you want something lightly scary, yet tame. For an adult party, you can go all out scary.

  2. Step 2

Consider party location. Think about all different sorts of ways to turn your party place into a scary dwelling. The use of special effects is a great idea for a Halloween party. You can make ghosts pop out, smoke swirl around the yard, have low or flickering lights, spiderwebs, cemetery setups and bats.

  3. Step 3

Find party decorations. Your choice of decorations will have a big impact on what Halloween theme is right for your party. Availability is important. Visit your nearby party store to view the Halloween (plates, napkins, favors, cups and centerpieces) decor or search for party supplies by theme online (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Correlate the theme with costumes or activities. It is a good idea for the hosts to look like the party they are throwing. A haunted house theme with The Adams Family costumes is a classic, for example. You can do a monster theme, scary movie theme, haunted house or the ever-popular graveyard scene. Be sure to tell your guests to dress up.

  5. Step 5

Think about spooky music. No Halloween theme is complete without some scary music. Music is not hard to find at all. You can get CDs of scary medleys for cheap. Search for titles that best suit your party and guests (see Resources below).

  6. Step 6

Keep your budget in mind. With all the scary choices out there, it is easy to go over budget. Some Halloween themes may require more work and accessories than you want your theme to include. Just remember that the key to a great Halloween party is to make it full of surprises, activities and good treats.
