How to Update Firmware on a Mac OSX

Firmware updates fix bugs and make a computer run smoother and more efficiently. Any time an update is available for your computer you should take advantage of it. If you have a Mac, you are extraordinarily lucky. Apple makes it easy to update everything for your Mac, including the firmware. It just takes a few minutes and you'll have a Mac that is running even better and with fewer bugs than before!

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Mac to the Internet.

    • 2

Check Software Update. It is in the upper left hand corner of your screen under the Apple icon. Click on it and it will check for any new software updates for your Mac.

    • 3

Check the box next to firmware update (if one is available) and click Download. It may take several minutes to download.

    • 4

Notice the prompt to install the firmware update. To install, close all applications and shut down your computer. Make sure your computer is plugged into a power source BEFORE you shut it down! This is very important for laptop users.

    • 5

Press and hold down the power button until the sleep light blinks several times and the Mac lets out a long tone. Release the power button.

    • 6

Note that your Mac should start up with a gray screen with the Apple icon and a progress bar on it. Wait for the progress bar to load. This may take several minutes. Your Mac should then start up as usual. Your Mac will tell you the firmware update is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the screen with the Apple icon and the progress bar does not show up, try the process again.
