How to Force Quit Applications in Mac OS X

Force quitting an application allows a user to close a program immediately. It also allows users to close programs that are not responding, or have frozen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Go to the Apple menu by clicking the apple icon in the top left corner of the screen.

  2. Step 2

    Select Force Quit from the Apple menu, which will pop up a "Force Quit Applications" window.

  3. Step 3

    Select the program you wish to quit.

  4. Step 4

    Press the "Force Quit" button on the pop-up window.

  5. Step 5

    Pressing command-option-escape together will also bring up the window.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you see a program not responding, clicking the program's icon on the dock while holding the Control key will also allow you to Force Quit the application.
