Things You'll Need:
- Heavy book (for flattening)
- Clear glass votive
- Rubbing alcohol and paper towel (optional)
- Paintbrush
- White craft glue
- White tissue paper
- Water
- Small mixing bowl
- Tea light
-
Step 1
Take a walk in your yard or the park to gather leaves and small foliage in different shapes and colors. Make sure these are still alive, otherwise they will crumble as you work on this project.
-
Step 2
Brush any loose dirt off of the leaves you have gathered. Lay them flat on a table and place a heavy book on top for at least 2 hours to flatten them as much as possible.
-
Step 3
Wash the glass votive holder and dry it thoroughly. To insure that no oils and dirt remain on the votive's surface, wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.
-
Step 4
Brush a thin layer of white glue onto the outside surface of the votive with the paintbrush. Pick out a few of the flattened leaves and position them on the votive, pressing them gently into place in the glue.
-
Step 5
Mix a homemade decoupage solution of half water and half white glue. Both measurements should remain equal to one another, no matter the amount you mix. The final result should be the consistency of paint, enabling you to apply a thin layer on the votive jar.
-
Step 6
Shred the tissue paper into small squares with approximately 2-inch-long sides. Spread a thin layer of the decoupage solution over the leaves, and press the squares gently into the solution. Repeat as necessary until the entire jar is covered.
-
Step 7
Apply a final coverage layer of decoupage solution over the entire jar. It should be smooth and wet-looking, but not dripping.
-
Step 8
Fold pieces of the shredded tissue over the lip of the jar, all the way around, affixing them with the decoupage solution onto the inside of the jar as well. Set the jar aside to dry for at least 12 hours. Place a tea light candle inside your fall candle holder once it is completely dry.
