How to Plan Fun Activities for Seniors in the Winter
It's important for seniors to keep their minds and bodies active but "Old Man Winter" can put a wrench in people's plans. The elderly are especially sensitive to the cold and it can be a particular danger for them. Finding a balance of an activity that's safe and free of the elements, yet mentally and physically simulating, requires a little creative planning.

1
Move the outdoors in. You may not be able to go on a walk, so do some winter-themed crafts. Create snow flakes and snow men out of paper or other materials to capture the essence of the winter without all the nastiness that comes with it.
-
2
Bring others to you. Invite some carolers from church or youth you know. Have them make hot chocolate together and afterward sing holiday songs. Alternately, they could decorate trees together or the senior's house or room.

3
Arrange a bus tour. From the comfort of a bus or vehicle, check out the holiday lights or, if it is earlier in the season, the foliage. Choose a scenic route that will look like a winter wonderland. It's also worth going on formal tours in your area that may still be running during the winter, perhaps with historic, cultural or holiday themes.
-
4
Pick up a new hobby. Take cooking classes or hire a student from culinary school or a chef to come in and cook with you and your loved one. Try your hand at dancing or pottery. You and your loved one won't even experience cabin fever this winter.
-
5
Check out a virtual sport. Invest in an attachment to a computer that will let seniors virtually fly a plan, ride a bike or drive a fast car. This will mentally and physically stimulate them.
-
6
Be a part of an indoor walking program or start one. Many hospitals, elder care centers and indoor shopping malls sponsor or host daily morning walking groups. This is a great way to socialize with others and stay active, yet out of the elements. If you don't have one in your area, start one by contacting the manager of a local venue and gathering seniors you know.
-
7
Advocate for a seniors exercise or yoga class. Try a low-impact fitness or aerobics class. Aqua jogging is a relaxing alternative, which will keep the body moving from the comfort of a heated pool.
-
8
Create your own island. Tired of dreary Jack Frost? Create a tropical paradise by hosting an island-themed party, complete with Hawaiian music, complimentary leis and tropical fruit and drinks.
