Miami-Dade County is responsible for regulating section 8 housing and housing assistance programs in the Miami area. There is a large need for affordable housing in the area, which means that the city has a long wait list. If you’d like to be added to this wait list, you first need to apply for section 8 housing in Miami. Florida has one of the easiest processes to do this in the country.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Spend some time on the Section 8 Housing page of the Miami-Dade county website. The website contains a wealth of information on the program and the way the program works in the Miami area. You can also find out when the county is taking applications for the program and when they’ve closed their waiting list for the year.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that you meet the requirements for section 8 housing in Miami. This means that you’ve had no convictions within five years, meet income limits and that you don’t currently owe money to any section 8 landlord in the area. There are other requirements that must be met as well.

  3. Step 3

Schedule an appointment with a housing counselor working for the county. You can only schedule an appointment when the waiting list is open, as they won’t meet with residents when the waiting list is closed or full.

  4. Step 4

Arrive at your appointment, and bring along all necessary documentation as outlined on the Miami-Dade County website. This includes income verification, a valid driver’s license, contact information and a social security card.

  5. Step 5

Speak with your counselor about the section 8 process, and fill out the application on the premises. The application will then be sent for processing and you’ll be notified about their decision. In most cases you’ll be added to the waiting list for available housing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Apply for section 8 housing early in the year, as early as possible. This places your name higher on the list and betters your odds of finding a home.
  • You can’t apply for section 8 housing in Miami once they close the list. This usually happens toward the end of the year, but it can also happen early on depending on the need of locals.
