Instructions

    • 1

Cut red card stock into postcard-size pieces, making one for each person you wish to invite. Decorate the front of each piece to look like a ticket, writing "Admit One to Susie's Third Birthday" on the front. On the back, write party details, inviting each guest to the "Greatest Birthday Show on Earth." Mail them as postcards, tuck them in envelopes, or hand each one out personally.

    • 2

Hang lots of colorful streamers in the middle of the ceiling of the room or directly over the table. Pull each one to a different area of the wall and tape them so that they drape down to look like a big top tent. Set bunches of helium balloons in bright, primary colors around the room as well. Use unopened cans of vegetables, wrapped in foil or gift wrap, as balloon weights. If your child has any appropriate stuffed animals--such as lions, tigers or elephants--set them around the room.

    • 3

Cut several holes in a large cardboard box. The holes should be large enough for a bean bag to fit into. Have each child try and toss a bean bag into a hole, giving each child three tries. Have one prize for one bean bag, a different one for two and so on. Float toy ducks in a kiddie pool or dishpan and write "1," "2" or "3" on each duck. Let each child choose a duck and they win the corresponding prize. Have a face painting area, and have an older sibling or other family member paint fun designs on the partiers' faces.

    • 4

Serve circus foods such as hot dogs or corn dogs, popcorn and snowcones. A cotton candy, snowcone or even a big popcorn machine would be a big hit with the kids, if you can get your hands on one. Many local party supply businesses rent them at reasonable rates. Lemonade, punch and juice boxes are fun beverage choices. Decorate cupcakes baked in ice cream cones to look like clown faces for a fun alternative to a big birthday cake.

    • 5

Use popcorn bags as goodie bags. Tuck in washable tattoos, small bottles of bubbles, stickers and other fun favors. Guests can also use the bags to carry home prizes won at the party games.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are short on time and decorations, bake cupcakes in the ice cream cones, ice with frosting and cover with sprinkles for a different look kids will love.

  • Some small children are fearful of clowns, so think twice before hiring one for your child's party.

  • Supervise young children when they are eating foods such as hot dogs or popcorn, as they can easily choke.
