How to Choose Prefold Cloth Diapers

Prefold cloth diapers are one of the least expensive ways to diaper a baby. A prefold consists of several layers of fabric, with extra layers in the middle where the diaper needs it most. Some parents use inexpensive prefolds just as burp cloths or rags, but if you want to use them for diapering, you’ll need prefolds that are high quality. While cheap prefolds sometimes use polyester batting as a filler, quality prefolds use nothing but layers of fabric.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for prefolds that are diaper service quality (DSQ) if you plan to use them for diapering. Online cloth diaper stores often sell Chinese or Indian prefolds, since these are more absorbent than some of the name brand diapers found in most stores. Indian prefolds are known for being softer, while Chinese prefolds may be more durable, although the differences may vary from brand to brand.

  2. Step 2

Choose between bleached and unbleached prefolds, if available. Bleached diapers are bright white, while unbleached diapers are a dull, light brown--the natural color of cotton fabric. Bleaching makes the diapers look more appealing, but it can also wear out the fabric faster and make it show stains more easily.

  3. Step 3

Select the size of prefolds you need for your baby. Some stores carry only one or two sizes, while others carry four sizes or more. The most common sizes include newborn, infant and toddler. Remember that cotton prefolds will shrink a bit after washing.

  4. Step 4

Choose the thickness you want for the prefolds. Most prefolds give the thickness in three numbers, such as 2 x 5 x 2, 4 x 6 x 4, or 4 x 8 x 4. This refers to the number of layers on each side and the middle of the fabric. The more layers, the thicker the diapers. Thicker diapers absorb more, but are also bulkier, especially on young babies.

  5. Step 5

Compare the prefolds available at a number of cloth diaper sites or stores. Read the customer reviews where available, so you can compare the quality of the diapers as well as the prices. Some cloth diaper sites offer package deals if you order prefolds by the dozen, or with a set of diaper covers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most prefolds must be washed at least three to four times before you use them in order to make them soft and absorbent.
  • Although most prefolds are made from cotton, you can also find prefolds made from organic materials and sustainable fibers such as hemp.
  • Despite the name, you still have to fold prefolds in order to get them the right shape to diaper the baby. See the Resource links below for instructions.
