A simple outing to the park can mean an ordeal when packing the diaper bag. Packing for an overnight stay can be truly difficult. However, with a few quick tips and tricks, the bag will be the perfect tool for you to use while the baby is away from home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of what your child uses in a twenty-four hour time period. Common items include, toothbrush, clothing, pajamas, small toys and books, and, most of all, diapers.

  2. Step 2

Pack with emergencies in mind. Don't assume your child will go through the same number of outfits as usual. Pack extra important items such as diapers and clothing to avoid running out.

  3. Step 3

Use space saving items. If you normally use cloth wipes bring disposables instead as they pack much smaller. You can still use cloth diapers if you use some other space-saving alternatives.

  4. Step 4

Assemble everything you will need prior to packing the bag. Using a flat surface such as your bed, lay out everything you will need. Now you can go down your list and easily assess if anything is missing. Also decide how everything will best fit in the bag.

  5. Step 5

Roll clothing to save space and pack it to the side of the diaper bag in the largest compartment.

  6. Step 6

Stack your diapers next to the clothing.

  7. Step 7

Continue adding items while packing as compactly as possible.

  8. Step 8

Use the outside pockets for small, hard items. Sippy cups, medicine vials, sunscreen and other necessities go here.

  9. Step 9

Check the bag for gaps. The diaper bag should be packed tightly so that nothing slides around in transit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pack one or two small, healthy snacks in the outer pockets but save the rest of any food you need to go in a separate bag.
  • If someone else will be caring for your baby during the overnight stay, unpack your bag when you reach your destination and show the caregiver everything you've packed.
  • Consult your list at each step to ensure that you have everything you need. It is easy to forget small, common items if you are relying on your memory alone.
