Winter time can be a rough time for our hair. Why? The harsh winds and the cold air can cause our hair to become dry faster. Dryness can cause breakage and over time damage from split ends. But do not fear if you live in an area of the country that has many cold winter days. There are steps you can take to protect your hair in the winter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Condition your hair every time you wash it. If your hair is dry, use a rich conditioner. If your hair is oily, you should choose a lighter conditioner or apply only on the length of the hair, avoiding the scalp area.

  2. Step 2

Deep condition your hair every week. This is done by purchasing a special hair conditioning packet which can be found at most department stores or drug stores. The packet holds enough conditioner for one application. Wash your hair as you normally would. Then apply the condition all over your hair (avoiding the scalp area if you have oily hair). Wrap a towel around your hair or place a shower cap on your head, covering your entire hair length. Allow the conditioner to set on your hair for five to ten minutes. Rinse with cool water.

  3. Step 3

Cover your hair when it is extremely cold outside or when the wind is blowing. You can do this easily by wearing a hat, cap or scarf.

  4. Step 4

Avoid washing your hair more often theen needed. Frequent hair washing can cause the scalp to loose moisture that it needs, especially in the winter months.

  5. Step 5

Use lukewarm or cool water when washing your hair. Hot water can cause damage to the hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • When conditioning your hair, pay extra attention to the ends.
  • If your hair is especially dry and brittle, consider using a leave in conditioner.
  • Use products that have the word replenish written on it. This means the products are meant to moisturize the hair.
  • Never go outside in the winter time with wet hair. Wet hair is more vulnerable to breakage and damage than dry hair is.
  • Many people turn toward hot oil treatments to repair their damaged, dry hair. However, this can cause your hair to become too oily and then you can suffer oil problems.
