Prevent a Bunny From Having Accidents

Bunnies are delightful pets that ordinarily live long, happy lives. If you’re planning to keep your bunny in the family for years to come, you’ll need a few tips to ensure its safety.

From Quick Guide: Pet Rabbit Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Door stops
  • Slippers
  1. Step 1

Always use doorstops to keep doors from slamming closed on your bunny.

  2. Step 2

If your bunny is “free-range” and hops all around your home, make sure to keep watch of where you step. As an even better precaution, have people remove their street shoes once they’re inside the house. Put on a pair of slippers, instead.

  3. Step 3

Bunnies will chew on just about anything, so be sure to hide or bind loose electrical and phone cords.

  4. Step 4

If your bunny has run of your yard, be especially careful about closing gates, and place him in a hutch at night, or bring him inside. Predators abound, even in the suburbs, so don’t assume your rabbit is safe outside all night long.

  5. Step 5

If you keep your bunny in a run, be sure that it has a covering on top, in case predators climb over the fence.

Tips & Warnings
  • No matter where you decide to keep your bunny, make sure he is protected from the elements. Too much heat can kill a rabbit within a few hours, and excessive moisture can cause respiratory disorders that may lead to death. A bunny needs shade and a cool, dry space with clean food and water.
  • Never allow small children (under 7) to hold a bunny without supervision. Rabbits are very fragile, and they can be injured or even killed by short falls. Always support the rabbit’s bottom, and hold the scruff of his neck when lifting him.
