Noun cards play a role in many Montessori lessons involving grammar and sentence construction. Montessori noun cards are a great way for children to interact with parts of speech in a way that makes a noun seem much more "real" and relevant than simply diagramming a sentence. Also, noun cards help with reading, since using them requires students to identify the word on the card before they are able to use the word in a sentence or place the card near or on an object.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make a list of simple nouns. These can be grouped in two categories--beginning and advanced. The beginning nouns should be entirely phonetic and generally will be only one syllable long. They should be words that the children will easily recognize from items in the farm lesson, the object boxes or from around the classroom. You might use words like "pig" and "man." The more advanced group of nouns can have phonograms, but they should still be things that are easy to recognize. You might use words like "boat" and "duck."

  2. Step 2

Write a single noun on each blank card. Nouns should always be written in black marker, or in white marker on a black card if this is what your Montessori school requires. The important thing is that the nouns are written in or on the color black consistently to help with sentence construction later, when different parts of speech will be color coded.

  3. Step 3

Laminate the noun cards. You can use a laminating machine for this if you wish. However, it is simple to lay a number of noun cards parallel to each other on a large sheet of contact paper, then seal them in with a second sheet. You can then smooth out all the air bubbles and cut the cards apart.

  4. Step 4

Write the word "Noun" on the top of the box. This box will hold the cards when they are not in use. Depending on what types of nouns you wrote on the cards, they may be used for assigning names to classroom objects, sentence building with the phonetic farm or reading practice.

  5. Step 5

Keep the noun box with the cards inside in an easily accessible place. In Montessori schools, children are encouraged to get out lessons and do them on their own, so you need to make sure that they can access this lesson.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can make general-use noun cards if you wish, but many schools use different types of nouns for different lessons. If you are making the cards for a specific lesson, make sure that the nouns you use match up with the objects in the lesson.
