Maria Montessori designed an entire educational method that centers around children and how they learn best. In order to educate children in the best way for them, large movable alphabet pieces are used to build words. This can be one of the best ways for children to learn the alphabet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Movable alphabet blocks
  1. Step 1

Set up the large movable alphabet blocks in a center in the room. Remember that they should be in the reading and writing center that is far away from noisy or large centers. You want to make sure that they are separated from other centers, as well.

  2. Step 2

Show the children the large movable alphabet blocks. Explain to them how the blocks will fit together to form words. Show them the single blocks with the letters, and also show them the blocks like "SH," "TH" and other blocks that are sounds. Teach them how the blocks will fit together with themselves.

  3. Step 3

Have the children play with the large movable alphabet blocks. Remember that Montessori education is mostly up to the child to do on their own. Guide them through sounding out words and putting the blocks together to make words.

  4. Step 4

Supervise the children using the movable alphabet blocks. When they get a word correct, write it on the board behind the center so other children might attempt to make that word and so all children will remember the words that they have made.

Tips & Warnings
  • Montessori education is mostly self taught.
  • Don't be critical of a child's attempt to form words with large alphabet blocks.
