With the release of Mac OS X Tiger, Apple included a new application called Dashboard on all new Mac computers. When opened, Dashboard allows users to run mini-programs, also called widgets. These widgets include weather indicators, sports scores and flight trackers. In addition, Apple invited outside developers to create new widgets, and now users can download and install them onto their Dashboard.
