How to Build a Bob Dylan Album Collection

Building a proper Bob Dylan album collection takes time, research, dedication and--last but certainly not least--money. However, the reward of having a historic vinyl collection of Dylan's finest material is invaluable to any music lover.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a local record store that deals primarily or at least partially in vinyl. It's safe to assume that store will have a Bob Dylan section. Look through that Dylan section, and you'll most likely find something you want to buy. Don't stop there, though: Look through any other sections where Dylan records may be filed, including pop/rock, singer/songwriter and perhaps even spiritual. (Dylan went through a religious phase.) You may find something more obscure in other areas, and that is where you'll usually find the best deals.

Speak with the store clerks and employees; they're usually your greatest resource. They may have a private inventory they're willing to show you. Next, ask them if they know of any trade shows, flea markets or other stores in other areas that have worthwhile selections. Usually, they will have a wealth of information for you.

Search on the Internet. The Amoeba Music and Newbury Comics sites are popular destinations for vinyl lovers. Also, do research on Bob Dylan's releases so you know which label originally put them out (which in nearly all cases was Columbia), and the year they were released. Wikipedia has a very extensive collection of pages on Bob Dylan's releases.

Attend any flea markets, yard sales or street markets you hear about that are in or around your hometown. There's always a possibility that a music dealer at one of these may have an incredible collection. Also, it is always possible that someone hosting a simple yard sale may have something worth much more money than he realizes, and you may get very lucky.

Travel to record stores around the country. There are some stores out there that are essential to visit if you truly desire a solid Bob Dylan collection. Vinyl-Record Stores U.S.A. and RecordStoreReview.com are both comprehensive and easy-to-use resources that allow you to search stores by state. Ask the owner of your local store what other stores around the country he recommends; he will most likely have a long list for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not be afraid to ask for information and advice, especially at a record store. Most of the people involved in this industry are music lovers who will be more than willing to help you.

  • Be wary of people who try to sell you vinyl for an unreasonable amount of money, claiming a record is "rare" or "only had a circulation of such-and-such." Do the proper research to make sure you know what you are buying.
