How to Draw an Updo

Drawing an updo is the perfect way to give your subject a classy and refined look. Updos are easier to draw than looser styles and only require a few simple strokes. When drawing an updo you can even embellish it to fit with your female subject's environment.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Eraser
  1. Step 1

    Lightly define the hairline with wispy strokes of your pencil.

    Draw the hair with the side of your pencil lead in strokes that wrap around the shape of the head.

    Define the hairline with darker strokes and add some dark strokes to the hair with the tip of your pencil lead. Make sure the strokes follow the sweep of the hair.

    Using your eraser, put some highlights in where the light would touch the hair the most. This is different depending on your light source.Add some wispy hairs around the hairline of your updo and you're done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the hair extends past the forehead for a realistic look.
