Candy canes are a staple for any home during the Christmas season. They are eaten, given as presents, hung on Christmas trees and made into crafts. Candy canes are perfect crafts for younger children because they are so simple to draw. A young child can create one without getting frustrated. This craft teaches children how to make a candy cane that shrinks when cooked. Children should make their candy cane and then wait for their parents to place it in the oven.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shrinky Dink sheets
  • Colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Oven
  • Cookie sheet
  1. Step 1

Pick up a package of Shrinky Dink sheets. Your local craft store such as Michael's or A.C. Moore should have these. If not you can buy them from the original makers of Shrinky Dink at their website.

  2. Step 2

Take out a Shrinky Dink sheet rough side up. Lay the smooth side against your workspace area.

  3. Step 3

Use a red or white colored pencil to draw the outline of your candy cane. Make sure you are drawing on the rough side of the Shrinky Dink and that the candy cane is much bigger than you actually want. Remember that it is going to shrink.

  4. Step 4

Color in your candy cane with a colored pencil. Make a red and white swirl or do another color with white in a swirl pattern. You can use the picture above for inspiration.

  5. Step 5

Use your scissors to cut out your candy cane. Make sure you leave a clear space all the way around. This allows some room for the shrinkage.

  6. Step 6

Get your oven heated to 325 degrees F.

  7. Step 7

Place the Shrinky Dink rough side up on the cookie sheet.

  8. Step 8

Place the Shrinky Dink candy cane in the oven for 60 seconds and remove.

  9. Step 9

Allow to cool off and then use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a hole puncher to punch a hole in the candy cane. Slide a string through the hole and wear as a necklace or hang from the Christmas tree.
  • Place a magnet strip on the back of the candy cane and stick on the refrigerator.
  • Only adults should use the oven.
  • Watch the Shrinky Dink candy cane in the oven so that it does not burn. It only takes seconds to burn.
