Instructions

    • 1

Set the paper plate down on a clean workspace. Color it in a patchwork pattern with colored pencils. Use fall colors such as red, yellow and brown, but mix in other colors such as purple and blue for more variety.

    • 2

Fold the paper plate in half with the colored part on the outside. Then fold it another time, so that it looks like a triangular shape with one rounded end. Place the twig inside the folds of the plate and secure it with tape or hot glue. Trim the twig if it seems too long.

    • 3

Draw a witch's face on a piece of white construction paper. Then draw a closed hand and feet with a shoe shape at the end. Also draw the straw portion of the witch's broom with jagged edges. Draw the shape of the witch's hair separately.

    • 4

Cut out a flowing black cape from black construction paper. Make it look like it's being blown by the wind. Then cut out the shape of a battered witch's hat.

    • 5

Draw red shoes and a red stripe on the witch's feet. Draw an eye and pink lips on her face. Draw over the witch's hair with an ochre pencil. Space out the marks and allow some white paper to show through to create hair texture.

    • 6

Glue the feet to the inside of the folded paper plate at the front of the curved side. Attach the hand directly over the twig where it emerges from the paper plate. Glue on the witch's face, then attach her hair to the face. Secure the hat on top of the hair. Use craft glue whenever possible, but use hot glue for any stubborn pieces that won't stay put.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach identical construction paper pieces to the opposite side to make a two-sided witch craft.

  • Use watercolors instead of colored pencils to decorate your witch's skirt.

  • Make a larger version of the craft so you can play a "Pin the Hat on the Witch" game at your next Halloween party.

  • Use red glitter to give your witch some ruby slippers.

  • Supervise your children carefully while doing this craft project.
