The Prometheus Neapolitan scale is a very unusual scale. It utilizes both a raised fourth degree and a lowered seventh degree; this makes the step pattern of the scale very unique. The step pattern is whole step, whole step, whole step, minor third, half step and a final whole step.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by placing your second (middle) finger on the fifth fret of the sixth string. This is the root note of the Prometheus Neapolitan scale.

  2. Step 2

Use your fourth (pinky) finger to hold down the seventh fret of the fifth string. This is the note B. B is the second degree of the Prometheus Neapolitan scale.

  3. Step 3

Use your first (forefinger) finger to play the fourth fret of the fifth string. This is the note C sharp, the third degree of the Prometheus Neapolitan scale.

  4. Step 4

Use your third (ring) finger to play the sixth fret of the fifth string. This is the note D sharp. D sharp is the fourth degree of the scale.

  5. Step 5

Play the fourth fret of the fourth string with your first finger. This is F sharp, the fifth degree of the Prometheus Neapolitan scale.

  6. Step 6

Play the fifth fret of the fourth string with your second finger. This is G, the sixth degree of the scale.

  7. Step 7

Use your fourth finger to hold down the seventh fret of the fourth string. This is the note A, played one octave higher than the original root note you played in step one.

  8. Step 8

Play steps seven through one in reverse order to complete the scale.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a metronome when practicing your scales. This will help you to develop a keen sense of timing. Gradually increase the tempo as your skills improve.
