How to Find Writing Contests
Making a career out of writing is hard enough, but making a career out of writing fiction is something that you can spend a lifetime working towards and never accomplish. While pay for short stories tends to be fairly low, you raise your chances of getting accepted if your name is known. One way to become known is to enter and win writing contests, but first you have to find them.
Instructions

1
Join your local writing organization. There are organizations like the California Writers Club all over the country, and many of these sponsor writing contests.
-
2
Read writing magazines. Many of the writing magazines sponsor their own contests, and even if they do not, they often advertise other contests.
-
-
3
Read writing blogs. Sometimes blogs will have caption contests or short fiction contests among their readers. You may not gain a lot of recognition, but it is a great boost.
-
4
Attend writing conferences. Many of them will sponsor their own contests in addition to offering workshops and classes.
-
5
Search online if all else fails. To get a local contest, search for "writing contest" and the name of your city, county, region or state.

Tips & Warnings
Search for small, local contests. You will have a better chance of going farther in a small pile than you will if your entry is one of thousands.
