How to Make Your Own Hook & Loop Sandpaper

Kittie McCoy

Hook and loop sandpaper is designed for use on sanders that feature a hook surface. The sandpaper itself has a backing of loops so that it sticks firmly to the surface of the sander. This prevents the sandpaper from slipping off of the sander and makes changing the sandpaper extremely simple, as all you need to do is peel off the old sandpaper and slap on a new piece. You can purchase hook & loop sandpaper specifically made for use on your sander, but you can save money by making your own.

Use hook and loop tape to make custom sandpaper for your sander.

Step 1

Place your sander on top of a piece of sandpaper with the hook surface of the sander against the paper.

Step 2

Trace around the sander with a marker. Remove the sander from the sandpaper.

Step 3

Cut the sandpaper along the marker lines. The sandpaper is now the correct size for your sander.

Step 4

Cut two or three strips of industrial-strength hook and loop tape. Only use the loop side--the soft, fuzzy side--of the tape, as the hooks are already on your sander.

Step 5

Remove the backing from the loop tape and press it firmly onto the back of the sandpaper. You do not need to cover the entire back of the paper, but try to cover at least 60 percent of the paper to ensure that it sticks to your sander.

Step 6

Press your homemade hook and loop sandpaper onto your sander.
