Observe the size of the dog. The Glen of Imaal Terrier stands up to 14 inches at the shoulders and weighs between 30 and 40 lbs., with males being slightly larger than females.

Look at the coat color of the dog. The Glen of Imaal Terrier comes in shades of blue, brindle and wheaten, with the most commonly seen color being a blue brindle shade.

Check over the dog’s head and ears. Glen of Imaal Terriers have a strong, full muzzle with a black nose and dark brown eyes. The ears should be small and either half-prick or rose in shape.

Examine the dog’s body structure. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is low to the ground, with approximately a 5 to 3 ratio of length to height. The forelegs will have a noticeably bowed appearance and the hindquarters will be strong and well-muscled.

Watch how the dog acts. Glen of Imaal Terriers are quite independent and have a very high prey drive. They love to chase game and will pursue small animals if given they chance. Unlike many terrier breeds, they are rather reserved and prefer lying on the couch over running the neighborhood.
