The Lhasa Apso is a small breed of dog originating in the mountains of Tibet. They were originally bred to alert the monks of the Tibetan monasteries of approaching intruders, although they are now more widely known as companion animals. That rich Tibetan heritage has not spared the Lhasa Apso from being abandone, and even in Colorado the need for Lhasa Apso rescue is apparent.

How to Start a Lhasa Apso Rescue in Colorado

  1. Step 1

Speak with your insurance agent to make sure your policy allows you to have a rescue in your home. Many policies require that you carry a certain amount of liability insurance to own a number of dogs, so make sure you are in compliance before opening your rescue.

  2. Step 2

Review local laws in your area regarding pet ownership. The majority of Colorado counties only allow you to own a small number of dogs without a permit. Speak with your city code officers if you are unsure of your area’s restrictions.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your tax adviser about your rescue plans. Rescues often rely on donated items and you need to be informed of the proper way to take in and use donated products.

  4. Step 4

Prepare your home for your new Lhasa Apso rescue dogs. Set up a quiet room in which you can quarantine any new dogs if necessary. You also want to make sure that you place any harmful products away in locked cupboards since the Lhasa Apso breed is very curious and will get into things they aren’t supposed to.

  5. Step 5

Inform local vet’s offices and adoption agencies of your rescue. Many vets and shelters keep listings of breed-specific rescues and will contact you if they take in any needy Lhasa Apsos.

  6. Step 6

Place ads in local publications. The Colorado Newspaper listings and the Denver Post can both be very valuable assets for your rescue. You can search these publications for Lhasa Apsos that need rescue as well as look for items that your rescue might need.

  7. Step 7

Seclude any new Lhasa Apsos that you rescue in your quarantine room for a few days. This time alone will allow them to acclimate to your home.

  8. Step 8

Groom your new Lhasa Apso carefully. The Lhasa has a thick, dense coat that needs careful grooming, so be sure any new rescue you take in is well-groomed to be as comfortable as possible.

  9. Step 9

Introduce your new dogs to your home slowly. Lhasa Apsos enjoy human companionship, so spend as much time as possible with any new rescue dogs you take in. Play with her and show your new Lhasa Apso rescue dog that life with you can be a safe and happy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Build your rescue slowly. You don’t want to take in too many dogs and not be able to offer them the time and attention they deserve.
  • Do not take in any sick Lhasa Apsos. Any illnesses can be easily spread to your current pets.
