Igloo

When you think of winter, you probably think of building snowmen and igloo's outside. There may be some winter days where you have no snow and you still want to build that igloo. If so, build one inside out of sugar cubes. This is not as hard as it sounds. Children can build one and then use it as a home for some of their small toys.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Get a piece of cardboard for your igloo base. This can be a square for a cardboard box or a circle from a pizza box. Make sure it is clean and ready to use.

    • 2

Draw a circle on your board with your pencil and a compass. Set your compass to draw a circle that is 7 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Paint the cardboard white except for the circle that you drew, which is where your igloo will be.

    • 4

Sprinkle coconut flakes on the white paint while it is wet. They will then dry to the paint and stay in place. Make sure no coconut flakes are on the circle.

    • 5

Start laying out your sugar cubes around your circle, but leave a space open for the entryway. Place your sugar cubes a little bit apart. They don't have to touch.

    • 6

Start the next layer of sugar cubes on top of the first layer. This layer requires you to use icing as the mortar. Use your knife and place icing on the bottom of each sugar cube as you stick it in place. Each sugar cube of the second layer should cover all of the gaps made in the first layer.

    • 7

Create layers three through five the same way you created layer two. Make sure you place icing on every sugar cube before sticking it into place. Set aside these layers to dry.

    • 8

Create the next top four layers on a piece of newspaper or a paper plate. These layers need to move inward toward the middle. They should still be created using icing as the mortar. Create them the same way you created your other layers. Leave a space in between each block, and set the row above it to cover the space.

    • 9

Use the icing to stick the top four layers on to the bottom five layers.

    • 10

Measure the top opening. Cut out a circle piece of cardboard to fit it exactly. You can use your compass to do this.

    • 11

Use the icing to glue the cardboard on the top opening.

    • 12

Cover the top cardboard piece with icing. Fit as many sugar cubes as you can on it.

    • 13

      Allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use glue instead if icing, but it will dry clear and won't look as authentic.

  • This craft will be hard to complete for small hands. It should only be attempted by children ages 8 and up to avoid frustration.
