Here's how to safely walk or jog on a shared road or highway, in the day or at night.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fluorescent safety vest
  • Reflective tape
  • Clip on LED safety light
  1. Step 1

Walk or jog toward oncoming traffic.

  2. Step 2

Walk or jog close to the outer edge of the road, not the white line.

  3. Step 3

Move further off the road if you see a large truck or reckless driver coming toward you.

  4. Step 4

Wear light colored clothing, whether it's day or night.

  5. Step 5

Consider buying a fluorescent safety vest, of the same type worn by road workers. These inexpensive vests make you very visible to oncoming traffic. Quality fluorescent safety vests have reflective striping built in.

  6. Step 6

Walk or jog with an LED headlamp or flashing clip-on LED blinker at night.

  7. Step 7

If you wear the same jogging suit every night, affix reflective tape to the cuffs and sleeves of your pants and jacket. Make a large reflective x or stripe pattern on the front and back of your jogging jacket if you don't own a fluorescent safety vest.
