Arbors, also known as pergolas, are garden passageways that define and create stunning exterior space. Commonly used in public gardens and high-end retail properties, you can add an arbor to your backyard garden from only a few hundred dollars.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Well stocked garden store (or)
  • Online arbor store
  • General home assembly tools
  1. Step 1

Look online to check out the different styles and types of arbors commercially available. Most arbors sold in America are made of wood. The homeowner is expected to assemble the arbor.

  2. Step 2

Narrow down the options until you find a style you feel will "fit" in your backyard.

  3. Step 3

Buy an arbor from a local garden store, or purchase an arbor online. You may be able to find a higher quality or speciality arbor online, but you will pay more for shipping.

  4. Step 4

Assemble the arbor yourself, or hire a friend or handyman to do the job. Assembling an arbor will use common tools, and will take from an afternoon to a full-day's work.

  5. Step 5

Place the arbor on a garden path, at the entrance to your garden.

Tips & Warnings
  • To minimize environmental impact, it's advisable not to buy a redwood arbor. Redwood is an ancient, slow growing tree. Choose cedar or other renewable wood options instead.
