Things You'll Need:
- Rubber gloves
- Bleach
- Warm water
- Scrubbing brush with a broomstick length handle
-
Step 1
Empty out as much of the residue from the can as possible. Shake the can upside down and thump the bottom to make anything stuck on the bottom fall out.
-
Step 2
Add warm water to the trash can until it's 1/3rd full.
-
Step 3
Put on rubber gloves and eye protection and add a splash of bleach to the water.
-
Step 4
Being careful not to get the bleach water on your clothes, stick the long handled scrubber into the garbage can.
-
Step 5
Work the brush against the bottom and sides of the can. Bring the brush up out of the water to scrub the upper sides and exterior of the can.
-
Step 6
Empty out the bleach water.
-
Step 7
Take the garbage can outside and rinse it with a high pressure garden house.

on 11/28/2008 Step 1 says to shake the can upside down and dump things out of it. Step 7 says to take the can outside. Does that mean we're dumping the can upside down in the house??? Yuk! Also -- a cup of white vinegar in the water will do a better job than the bleach and is safer too.
