How to Trim a Chihuahua's Toenails
Like all canines, chihuahuas need to have their toenails trimmed on a regular basis. While you may choose to visit your veterinarian to get this done, performing this task at home is easy. Trimming your dog's nails yourself will save time and money. If your animal is not sure about you handling his feet, remember that this is a normal reaction. Dogs have an inherent fear of having their feet handled but this can be overcome with time and kindness on your part. Have someone help you if your chihuahua is scared at first. Work with your dog and get him used to having his feet handled and with time, your dog should let you trim his nails by yourself.

When trimming the dog's nails, avoid cutting into the quick. Cutting into the quick will cause pain in your dog and will result in that nail bleeding for a short period. If your animal has any white toenails, you will be able to see the quick. You want to trim a short distance in front of the quick. On a black toenail, look at the bottom side of the nail. There will be a thick section that drops off to a "v" that extends to the tip of the nail. Trim in front of the thick section in the "v."
