How to Tie a Decorative Knot

There are many different knots and many purposes that these knots are meant to serve. Sometimes, however, it is fun to try your hand at different knots, especially decorative knots, just to see if you can make them work. One very beautiful decorative knot is the star knot, which can be used as the top and bottom of a handle made of rope.

Instructions

    • 1

Bind 6 pieces of 28-inch long paracord together with floss. Each piece of cord must be the same length.

    • 2

Trim the ends of the cord close to the dental floss binding and melt the ends together with a lighter.

    • 3

Melt each of the other ends of the pieces of cord into a taper.

    • 4

Make a single hitch on each of the 6 pieces of cord tight against the binding. Do this by taking a piece of cord and pushing it under the piece of cord to its right, then bring it back over to its place over the top of that cord and tucking it through the loop this creates. Make each of these hitches as symmetrical as possible.

    • 5

Make a crown knot by folding each piece of cord to inside of the piece of cord to its left, tucking the last piece of cord under the cord to its left.

    • 6

Loop each piece of cord back to the right, bringing it through the loop it just made in the previous step and then through the "point" of the "star" two to the right.

    • 7

Flip your knot over and bring each piece of cord back to the front of the knot through the center. You should see a piece of cord in the knot already there to guide each piece of cord way back through by staying parallel with that piece.

    • 8

Flip your knot back over once more and bring each piece of thread back to the back of the knot through the outside "points" of the "star" as you did before. When you are done there should be 3 parallel lines of cord heading from the center of your knot to each "point" of the "star."
