Few things are as frustrating as wanting longer hair and waiting for it to grow. Whether your desire to grow your hair is for beauty or a new hairstyle (or to correct a bad one), or to grow hair after medical treatments, it can seem as if your hair stays the same length day after day, week after week. But there are things you can do to promote longer hair.

    • Scalp massager (optional)

    • Assortment of shampoos and conditioners

        Variety of scalp brushes

        Give yourself a scalp massage. Healthy hair growth is supported by healthy hair follicles. Clogged and blocked hair follicles do not allow the hair to effectively break through the scalp. A scalp massage is not only relaxing, it helps clear up hair follicles and stimulates circulation to the scalp. First, use your fingertips (or scalp brush) and apply medium pressure to your scalp using small, circular motions. Begin at the front in your hairline and work your way to the top of your head. Then move to the back of your head at the neck, and work back to the top again. Be sure to cover your entire scalp. This can be done in the shower before shampooing or while you're watching TV.

        Break up your shampoo/conditioner routine. Your hair responds well to a change, so once a month switch your shampoo and conditioner brand. Try something clear that will help remove some of the shampoo buildup. Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair after conditioning. It will allow the hair to separate without breaking. Apply a leave-in conditioner at least twice a week.

        Nourishing oil

        Apply a hot oil treatment to hair. The hot oil will help keep the hair supple and prevent drying and breaking. When hair breaks off at the ends, it can take longer to reach the length you desire. There are many hot oil treatments on the market, but in a pinch you can simply warm up some oil from your kitchen. Put the container of oil in warm water to warm the oil. Never heat it in the microwave. Apply the oil beginning 1/4 inch from the scalp to the ends.

        Nutrient dense fruits and veggies

        Make sure you are getting enough nutrient intake. Fill your diet with fruits, vegetables and extra protein, as protein is what your hair consists of. Take a quality multi-vitamin. A quality vitamin will have the vitamins and minerals necessary to promote healthy hair growth. Look for vitamins that have full B complex, C, and at least 800 IU of vitamin E. If your vitamin lacks in these, you can supplement them individually.

        Get plenty of rest, water and daily exercise. All help stimulate the circulatory system and feed your head.

    • Avoid using heat products on your hair. While there are many on the market that are gentler, heat causes damage, stress and breakage.

    • Cut down on stress, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and chemical usage. All help deplete your body of natural vitamins and minerals necessary for hair growth.
