In recent years, veterinary science has expanded and diversified into a plethora of specialties for the medical treatment of animals. Colleges and universities across the country now offer curriculum in veterinary specialties such as orthopedics, neurology, anesthesiology, surgery, infectious disease, oncology, radiology, dermatology, dentistry and more.The requirements for becoming a board-certified veterinary specialist vary from specialty to specialty.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Contact the New York State Veterinary Medical Society for information about veterinary schools accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) that are nearest to New York City (see Resources for a link to the website). Attend and graduate from a college of veterinary medicine and pass the board exam.

  2. Step 2

    Contact the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) website for a list of recognized veterinary specialty organizations (see Resources). Once you have decided on a specialty, contact the relevant ABVS Association to apply for admission to the residency program.

  3. Step 3

    Complete the 1-year internship portion of the program. Your specialty association will help you find an internship in New York City.

  4. Step 4

    Successfully complete the approved residency program in the specialty of your choice and pass the general exam. Residency programs range from 1 to 3 years, depending upon the certification track for the specific specialty. Some specialty programs also require residents to spend time working in related disciplines, such as radiology, anesthesia and/or surgery. Your specialty association will help you to locate a residency program in New York City.

  5. Step 5

    Submit the required credentials to the organization that certifies veterinarians in your particular specialty.

  6. Step 6

    Pass the specialty examination.
