Instructions

    • 1

Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up period. Incorporate the basics of moves you will use later as the class increases intensity. Write the movements on a note card.

    • 2

Choose three to four step combinations which will take approximately 40 minutes to complete. Design the combinations so that they build on each other, gradually increasing intensity. Write these movements in order on a note card.

    • 3

Reduce the intensity with a cool-down routine for 5 to 10 minutes. Incorporate some of the simple moves used in the warm up. Write the cool-down routine on a note card.

    • 4

Stretch each of the major muscle groups. Eventually lead the class to lie down on mats for relaxation.

    • 5

End the class with a 5-minute relaxation period using quiet mediation or progressive muscle relaxation techniques.

    • 6

Using the note cards and music at about 126 to 136 beats per minute, practice the routine as you plan to teach it in the actual class.

Tips & Warnings

  • Show participants alternatives and variations to increase or decrease intensity during the class.

  • Explain how to do each movement safely during the class.

  • Don’t ignore your class. Look for signs of boredom or exhaustion, and adjust the routine and music speed accordingly.
