How to Create a Pun Costume for Halloween
One of the most difficult parts of Halloween is coming up with an original costume. You could poke two holes in a sheet and go as a ghost, buy the sexy nurse costume always worn at sorority parties, or buy whatever superhero is popular this year. But if you really want something original, come up with a pun costume.

1
Think of common phrases or characters, especially two-word phrases that have a person's name or title in them. Examples include: a hanging chad, negative Nelly and General Electric.
-
2
Take stock of the props you have at home. See if any of them lend themselves to a particular name. For example, if you have an army helmet, lean towards phrases with a military theme.
-
-
3
Decide whether interpreting each word of the common phrase separately will lead to something entertaining. For example, hanging a guy named Chad with a noose, yes. Negatives and a person named Nelly, no.
-
4
Gather props to emphasize the two different parts of your phrase. For a hanging chad, get a big rope and a "hello my name is CHAD" sticker. Or wear a general's helmet and then cover yourself in power strips.
-
5
Put together the costume to represent each separate word of the phrase, but not the complete phrase. e.g. Represent hanging and a person named Chad, but do not use any actual election ballots with hanging chads.
-
6
Wear the costume proudly, and have each new person who greets you attempt to guess what you are dressed as.

Tips & Warnings
The ideal reaction from other people when you explain your costume is for them to say "Oh, I should have figured that out!"
Don't worry too much about making a fancy costume; the idea is more important for pun costumes.
