When solving equations, it’s important to know the properties of multiplication. These properties will help you factor, distribute and solve math problems. The only prerequisite is to know basic multiplication. From there, you can learn and use the four properties of multiplication.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand and practice the commutative property of multiplication. This property states that no matter which order the two multiplicands are in, the product remains the same. For example, 8 x 2 will result in the same product as 2 x 8.

    • 2

Understand and practice the associative property. This property states the product of three or more multiplicands will be the same no matter the order. For example, (3 x 4) x 5 yields the same product as (5 x 3) x 4.

    • 3

Understand and practice the multiplicative identity property. This property states that the product of any number and 1 equals that number. For instance, 9 x 1 = 9.

    • 4

Understand and practice the distributive property. This property states the sum of two numbers multiplied by a third number is the same as the sum of each addend multiplied by the third number. For example, (8+2) x 9 is equal to (8 x 9) + (8 x 2).

    • 5

Understand and practice the zero product property. This property states that any number multiplied by zero equals zero.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice solving equations using the links in the Resources section below. Once you are able to recognize the properties, you will be able to apply them to any equation using multiplication.

  • The most useful property, especially in equations, is the distributive property. Remember, you can distribute the third number, but you can also factor it out.

  • Don’t mix up the associative and distributive properties. Many people see the parentheses and pay no attention to the signs inside.
