How to Show Grandparents Some Appreciation on Grandparents' Day

Whether they are several hours away, in a nursing facility or living in or near our own homes, grandparents are a blessing that we should be thankful for. Not only are they a living record of our family history, they are there for us when we need them. Here are some ways to show them how much they mean to you.

Instructions

Don't take advantage. Grandparents who live close to us are often taken advantage of through babysitting, errands, etc. They offer because they want to, and many times end up doing things for us even when they would rather not. Offer them a gift certificate to a local restaurant or tickets to the theater. Get them a prepaid gas card. With today's gas prices, it will be a welcome gift when they decide to visit.

Don't forget elderly grandparents who are in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Even if your grandparents are already gone, there are elderly people who have been forgotten by others or whose families have moved away. Adopt a grandparent. Visit them regularly. You will never know just how much they will look forward to a visit. If you can't make it, send a card or some flowers. Even a phone call will lift their spirits and bring a smile to their face.

Throw a Grandparents' Day party. Invite some of their friends and have a barbecue. You do the cooking and the cleanup and allow them to mingle with their friends and neighbors and enjoy themselves. Decorate the house or party area with pictures of the grandparents and their grandchildren. If you want to have the grandchildren there, allow them to put on a skit or some form of entertainment. Either that or throw a childless party, where the adults can talk and do as they wish.

Getting away for a short vacation would be a nice change of pace. If the grandparents like to travel, make arrangements for them to take a weekend trip to a different city to do something they have never done, but always wanted to do. Encourage them to try something new and exciting.

Stay in touch. If the grandparents live far away, send flowers, cards or a gift box with some of their favorite things inside. Make a phone call. With the use of the Internet, families are finding creative ways to send home movies and pictures that can be personalized. If your finances allow for the extra expense, visit them or send them the tickets to come and visit you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find things they like to do and enable them to do them.

  • Don't force your ideas on them. If they don't like something you've planned, work to find something they do like.

  • Don't go overboard. Extravagance may be something they just don't need or want.
