Things You'll Need:
- W-2 form
- Bank account statements
- Income tax returns
-
Step 1
Provide the names, sex and birth dates of all those who will be living in the residence with you, and how they are related to you. They must be relatives. No friends will be considered when applying.
-
Step 2
Supply the address and telephone number of where you are living at the time you apply. If you are living with a relative who lives in a gated community, obviously your chances of Section 8 housing diminishes. Someone from HUD will verify housing information because of those who attempt to take advantage of the system.
-
Step 3
Reveal special qualifications. If you're a veteran or you're living in a place so bad it can be deemed unfit, inform the person who is taking your information--this may give you and your family preference and move you up the waiting list.
-
Step 4
Provide your tenant history. Providing the addresses, names and, if you have them, phone numbers of previous landlords of where you've lived. A HUD employee will contact them to ask about your behavior as a resident.
-
Step 5
Provide estimated income. From past pay stubs, you'll be able to provide your estimated income for the next 12 months. This is necessary to show that you can pay your portion each month.
-
Step 6
Provide the names and address of banks, credit unions and places where you've been employed. They may also ask for copies of past income tax filings, W-2 forms or other documentation that will prove income and family makeup.
-
Step 7
Prepare to be visited by someone from your local HUD to observe how well you maintain the place you're living.
