How to Tutor Algebra 2

Algebra II Book

Tutoring algebra 2 requires you to have a firm grasp of the subject. You must be able to explain each individual step of every type of equation. A large portion of algebra 2 is trigonometry and geometry. The rest involves solving equalities and inequalities, using the quadratic formula and solving polynomials. For many, learning algebra 2 seems impossible, but with a good tutor, most catch on quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet with your student to determine her needs. Some students need assistance only with certain topics.

    • 2

Create a lesson plan based around your student’s needs. Use the student's homework and book, or provide a book or homework of your own. The lesson plan should include all possible topics the student may have trouble with.

    • 3

Ask the student to work a sample problem to see where she may be going wrong. Sometimes a student may be missing only one step in a problem. Seeing your student's work in action is a good way to catch mistakes.

    • 4

Follow your lesson plan to teach the student. Cover not only the basics but more advanced topics as well.

    • 5

Work through sample problems with the student to be sure she understands what you’ve taught her.

    • 6

Ask the student if she has any questions and what she will be covering next. Answer the student’s immediate questions, and use the upcoming lessons to create your lesson plan for the next tutoring session.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient, and explain problems as thoroughly as possible.

  • You may want to meet with the student’s teacher to see what his teaching style is so that you know what the teacher is expecting.

  • Never expect that a student understands what you tell him. Ask him to work through examples and explain his steps so you know whether or not he is grasping the concepts.
