Things You'll Need:
- Basket
- Floral foam
- Filler (shredded paper, wood excelsior, etc.)
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Florist wire (20 gauge)
- Wooden skewers
- Cellophane tape
- Cellophane
- Decorative bow
-
Step 1
Purchase basket filler that will complement the basket's design and contents. Natural wood excelsior is available in craft stores and works with almost any basket design. Make your own filler with shredded paper or crumbled gift wrap, if desired.
-
Step 2
Create the base of your gift basket by securing a block of floral foam in the center of the basket, allowing space around the block for displaying smaller items. Anchor in place with a dab of hot glue from the glue gun. Fill the area around the base with filler, lightly covering the floral foam. Secure the filler in place with wire bent into a U shape and anchored to the foam.
-
Step 3
Place larger items in the back and smaller items towards the front of the basket. Display a featured item on the block of floral foam. Situate heavy items in the pockets between the floral foam and the sides of the basket to prevent the basket from being top heavy. Secure each item to each other or to the basket with a dab of hot glue.
-
Step 4
Attach small items to a wooden skewer with a dab of hot glue and insert the skewer into the floral foam. Adjust the height of individual items to create visual interest and depth to the basket.
-
Step 5
Fill in around gift items with additional filler to conceal the base and provide fullness. Add decorative items, like silk flowers or miniatures, by attaching them to skewers and inserting the skewers into the foam.
-
Step 6
Cut a strip of cellophane that is three times as long as the height of the basket. Set the basket in the center of the cellophane and bring the ends together to the top of the basket. Secure with a twist tie. Trim the excess cellophane to six inches by holding it vertical and cutting on a forty-five degree angle to the midway point. Repeat with the other side to create an inverted V shape. Fluff the top. Use cellophane tape to close any gaps or openings in the sides.
-
Step 7
Add a decorative bow by adding a wire to a bow and securing it in place at the point where the cellophane is twisted. Add silk flowers or other decorative features by gluing them to the center of the ribbon, if desired.
