There are several steps you can take to prevent white hair discoloration. Much like skin care products, there are many hair care products found at beauty supplies. It's possible that white hair turning yellow may be an age-related pigment change, but it also could be due to any one of various external influences such as the environment or condition of the water pipes. Gray and white hair do not contain any of the pigment that colors younger hair, therefore it tends to show colors of foreign materials picked up from water(from the shower or swimming pools for example) or even from pollutants in the air. Metals in the water such as copper are the most common causes of hair discoloration. Smoking can cause both the hair and fingernails to yellow. Yellowing can also be due to beauty supplies like shampoos, conditioners, or other hair care products.

Things You'll Need:

  • hair care products
  • beauty supplies
  1. Step 1

You might first try a hair care product like "No Deposit Shampoo" which will remove smoke and any product build up that might be causing the white hair discoloration.

  2. Step 2

You may also be able to correct the problem by using a hair care product like a shampoo or rinse that will subtly neutralize the off tones and restore a silver, gray or white tone to prevent white hair discoloration.

  3. Step 3

Look for a gentle natural blue or violet rinse to use on your hair, which can brighten silver hair and take the brassiness out of colored hair.

  4. Step 4

Damage may also be caused by perming your hair, use of excessive chemicals like hair dyes. The cuticle of the hair shafts are damaged and when they are come in contact with mineral deposits, it can cause redness and rusty looking hair.

  5. Step 5

Actually, iron and rust deposits are fairly common. It can be from well water, water from rusty pipes or just very hard water. Here are tips for removing iron and rust from hair.

  6. Step 6

Use a mixture of vinegar with some cream of tartar. Leave it for about 10 minutes and rinse with cool water.

  7. Step 7

Lemon juice is also handy. Apply it to your hair, leave for 10-15 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

  8. Step 8

Mix baking soda in with your regular shampoo. Wash your hair, rinse with plain water. Use a conditioner.

  9. Step 9

These hair care products can be a lifeline if you don't want to trim your hair to eliminate the problem.
