Things You'll Need:
- Stinky car
- Baking soda
- Vacuum
- Spray disinfectant, Febreeze, or air freshener spray
- Glass cleaner
- Armor all or comparable cleaner
- Paper lunch bags
- Aquarium charcoal
-
Step 1
First you'll have to thoroughly clean your car. Sprinkle baking soda liberally on all carpets and seats, work into the carpet with your hands, let set overnight. Clean all glass surfaces to remove cigarette tar, you'll be surprised at how much it can accumulate! Wipe down all other surfaces with rag soaked with Armor All or comparable product. Vacuum out all carpets and seats very thoroughly. Also, make sure to clean out ashtrays completely, that's where a lot of odors linger.
-
Step 2
Spray a disinfectant, or Febreeze, or air freshener VERY liberally under the dash while running the air conditioner and then the heater, making sure your air setting is not drawing in fresh air, but recirculating air from car. Let run for several minutes to ensure it has circulated through the system well.
-
Step 3
Place two cups of aquarium charcoal in paper lunch bag, fold over and staple or tape shut. Place one under each seat to absorb odors.

on 11/29/2008 I am also hypersensitive to smoke odor. There is a great new product on the market that will remove the odor completely and permanently. I am a real estate agent and use it to remove odors out of homes. The product that is designed specifically for cars is called auto vaccine. You can get it with a moneyback guarantee on a website called biocidesystems.com.
It even cleans out the air-conditioning filters, so the odor doesn't come back. It actually removes the odor it doesn't mask it or cover it up in any way. Try it its excellent!

on 10/24/2008 Being a non-smoker, I can't even buy a used car that belonged to a smoker; even AFTER they do their detailed cleaning. If someone does smoke though, cutting down on the smell with your tips probably makes a HUGE difference ! 5*
