Many homeowners are constantly space-challenged in their homes. You can learn to easily maximize small space living in your own home. Please read on....

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • more imagination than money
  • a little time
  • magnets (hardware store)
  • screwdriver or drill with bit to hang stuff
  1. Step 1
    Magnetized medicine cabinet.

    Magnetized medicine cabinet.

MAXIMIZE SMALL SPACE LIVING IN THE BATHROOM - Keep nail clippers and trimming scissors in the medicine cabinet where they can be found easily, but the space is limited. Put three small heavy duty magnets INSIDE the door of the medicine cabinet and they will hold the clippers just fine.

  2. Step 2
    Beach Mat Shelves.

    Beach Mat Shelves.

MAXIMIZE SMALL SPACE LIVING WITH OPEN SHELVING - If open shelving in the bathroom is an eyesore or if shelves have been painted too many times, try this treatment. Buy a few imported grass beach mats from a discount store that retail for a little over a dollar each.

Lay two strips of masking tape straight down the middle of the mat and cut between the strips. (The tape keeps the mat from fraying; the other edges come bound with a cloth edging.) With hot glue gun, wrap the beach mats around the shelves tucking in the taped portion. One mat will cover approximately two mid-size shelves, covering each shelf for a cost of 60 cents.

  3. Step 3
    Ikea mirror.

    Ikea mirror.

MAXIMIZE SMALL SPACE LIVING IN A ONE-BATH HOUSE. Small space living is almost a given in a one-bath home. If mornings are hectic and you need two mirrors, hang up a handy double-sided extension mirror.

Note one side of the mirror is magnified which is great for close up tweezing or makeup application. The mirror is available from Ikea. When it's not in use, fold the arm will fold against the wall, so it's out of the way until you need it next.

  4. Step 4
    Ebay pot rack.

    Ebay pot rack.

LIMITED KITCHEN SPACE - When you have limited space, go up the wall. In the kitchen, hang a half-round cast iron pot rack. You'll find this and similar styles available slightly used for a very reasonable price on Ebay.

Hang all your kitchen knifes on a magnetic knife rack which is another great find from Ikea. Make sure to hang the knives with the blades pointed downward for safety reasons.

  5. Step 5
    Shelf side view.

    Shelf side view.

MAXIMIZE SMALL SPACE LIVING in the bedroom. Take advantage of wood framing that's around a door or closet. Add a painted wooden shelf above the closet with brackets just outside the frame. Screw the shelf brackets directly into the studs to secure.

  6. Step 6

Small space living forces you to be inventive, to find maximum storage in a minimum space. Take a good look around your home and get ready to save some space.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are many space saving items available on the market now to help you get your home organized and maximize your storage, however, they can be quite costly. Take a look and see if you can find a similar item at a discount store for a lot less money.

on 4/10/2009 Great tips! I love the idea of a magnet in the medicine cabinet. It would save a lot of time digging around.
